Investing in Students

At John Carroll University, our curriculum is formed by more than 450 years of Jesuit Catholic teaching traditions.

John Carroll’s Jesuit heritage in the service of faith and the promotion of justice attracts students who are leaders in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in the community. Gifts of operating support will enable us to respond to each applicant’s individual needs to ensure that those admitted can both attend and graduate from John Carroll University. Endowed scholarships help ensure that our financial assistance program is sustained over time. Scholarships allow young men and women to experience John Carroll’s transformational education, regardless of their family’s financial situation.

By providing more competitive scholarships and financial aid, John Carroll can continue to attract and retain talented students who can make the greatest impact on society and the world.

Scholarships and financial aid help shape each freshman class, creating an academically talented and socially diverse campus that enriches the Carroll experience for all students.

The University seeks operating and endowment support for our scholarship programs that resonate with prospective students and embrace our mission:

  • Merit Scholarships: To attract and retain the best and the brightest students and enable them to focus on their academic studies, research, and internships, we seek funds in support of our Magis Scholarships, Presidential Scholarships, and University Scholarships.

  • Access Scholarships: To attract and retain students who have the greatest financial need by eliminating family income as a barrier to students considering a college education. We seek funds in support of academically qualified students from families that are eligible for the Federal Pell grant (typically families with an annual income under $40,000). JCU combines grant aid with federal and state aid, and the Federal Stafford Loan program, to help families offset tuition-only costs.
  • Arrupe Scholarships: To attract students who have already demonstrated a significant commitment to two interrelated values of John Carroll’s mission: intellectual inquiry that demands critical thinking and engaging in service.

  • Leadership Scholarships: To attract students who demonstrate leadership through prior high school activities, volunteer service, or employment, and have the greatest potential to make a powerful impact on John Carroll University.

“As a recipient of the Presidential Scholarship, I have been fortunate enough to be a part of the honors program at JCU. Because of the numerous resources on campus and opportunities in the surrounding community, I have worked at the two largest hospital systems in Cleveland, traveled to Honduras with medical brigades, and have been able to study public health through the new minor. Thanks to my scholarship, the phenomenal faculty, and array of activities on campus, I was able to find my niche and pursue it.”- Mary Benson ’13

“The philanthropic support I received during my undergraduate years at John Carroll University has enabled me to strengthen leadership skills both in and out of the classroom and develop a deeper appreciation for service and social responsibility. As a scholarship recipient, I felt much more motivated and engaged as a student and I never wanted to disappoint those who have supported me. By attending a Jesuit institution, I have learned the true value of men and women for others. After I graduate, I hope to become an active donor to help support future generations of John Carroll students.”

“My John Carroll experience means more to me with each passing day. I have been blessed with opportunities to contribute as a broadcaster with 88.7 FM WJCU and work in the Sports Information Department before I even began taking classes as a freshman. I was privileged enough to accompany JCU’s football team to the Globoal Ireland Football Tournament 2012 – an amazing experience that I was able to share with my parents as well. My scholarships made my time here affordable and have enabled me to truly strive for the Magis. I have been surrounded by faculty, staff, and administrators who lead by example. This Jesuit community holds a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to until I am in a position to financially support future Blue Streaks!”- Brendan Gulick ’13

“The scholarships I received from John Carroll have been more help than I could ever have imagined: because of them, I can graduate without debt; because of them, I haven’t placed a financial burden on my parents; because of them, my brother can go to the college of his choice, not just the one that’s the most affordable. My scholarship support has truly been a gift.”

“I received the Arrupe Scholarship and have loved every part of the program and all that it added to my John Carroll experience. My scholarship was a major part of my decision to attend JCU, and I couldn’t be happier with my choice. It has allowed me to connect with students and faculty that share a lot of my interests and passions. My scholarship also has allowed me to lead a variety of service projects that have given me valuable experience.”

The Arrupe Scholars Program has defined everything for my John Carroll experience. The courses I have taken through this program thus far have allowed me to understand the knowledge behind advocating against injustices and develop my beliefs more fully, rather than merely accepting what others say. This program has challenged me every day to go out and seek my own understanding of solidarity and justice, through active participation in the classroom and ongoing service activities. It has motivated me to develop an action-oriented commitment to act globally and reach out to unorganized communities.
