Mr. Robert E. Heltzel, Jr., retired owner and president of Kenilworth Steel, and his wife, Heidi, have donated $1 million to John Carroll University in support of the Forever Carroll Campaign. The Heltzel’s contribution advances a key pillar of the campaign: enriching the academic experience for students. It establishes the Heltzel Endowed Professorship in Economics in the John M. And Mary Jo Boler School of Business at John Carroll. The couple’s generous gift also includes a prized collection of Abraham Lincoln and Civil War Memorabilia.
Mr. Heltzel is a 1970 John Carroll University graduate. He is a member of the University’s Board of Directors. He also serves on the Board of Trustees at Gilmour Academy. Mr. Heltzel formerly served as president of Kenilworth Steel, in Warren, OH. Kenilworth provides carbon and alloy steel plates to customers nationwide. He retired from the company in 2006, but continued to serve as a consultant for several years. John Carroll University President Robert L. Niehoff, S. J., expressed gratitude for Mr. and Mrs. Heltzel’s donation, saying “Bob and Heidi are dedicated to what we are doing at John Carroll: preparing our students for the real world, grounded in the values of Jesuit education that teaches responsibility along with leadership.” Father Niehoff provided context, adding, “The Heltzel Endowed Professorship in Economics will assure that John Carroll attracts talented faculty—expertise that will be valuable for our students as they successfully pursue their career goals.”
“The commitment that Heidi and I have made to the Forever Carroll Campaign is really a reflection on our blessings, which lead to our desire to help create opportunities for bright young men and women who are seeking a John Carroll education,” said Mr. Heltzel. “Our gift can benefit today’s and tomorrow’s students in a number of ways that will help enrich their experiences at JCU, whether it be through scholarships or exposure to the Abraham Lincoln Civil War collection.”
The Abraham Lincoln collection includes nearly 60 historically significant photographs, signed documents, and rare books. It is housed in the Grasselli Library on campus. Additionally, it is now digitally preserved as part of the Library’s online resource, Carroll Collected. Among the articles and artifacts donated by the Heltzels to John Carroll are:
